South Seneca High School Senior appointed to New York Governor’s Youth Council

On July 1, 2021, Joseph Borst, a Senior at South Seneca High School, Ovid, NY was appointed to the New York Governor’s Youth Council, a statewide advisory group comprised of youth ages 13-21 from across New York State.

“Members of the NYS Governor’s Youth Council will offer their solutions to key issues facing young people in NYS to the Governor and other policymakers, including how to have better outreach and communication strategies to young people.”


Joseph resides in Ovid and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Borst Sr. Joseph is an active member in both his school and community. He is a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster and a longtime volunteer for STEPs (Seneca Towns Engaging People for Solutions). In his spare time, Joseph enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, kayaking and paddle-boarding and engaging in local government. He is interested in having youth voice heard within his school and community.

As part of the Genesee Valley Finger Lakes Region, Joseph will join eight of his peers along with regional representative, Annie Mahoney , Deputy Director Workforce Development and Youth Bureau to focus on “Creating Positive Interactions between Youth and Law Enforcement” and “COVID 19- Pandemic: What Worked? What Didn’t?”

Recommendations and proposals will be presented to the other 6 NYS regions as well as to the Statewide Advisory Council over the next several months.
