Man convicted after raping and assaulting woman in Horseheads between May 2 and May 5 in 2019

After raping and assaulting a woman over a four day time period in 2019, a Horseheads man has been convicted for the crimes.

Between May 2 and May 5 in 2019 Michael Burtner, 53, forced a woman to engage in intercourse and other sexual acts as well as physically assaulted her.


The woman was severely injured and suffered a brain bleed requiring a week in the ICU and physical therapy after the attack.

The charges include one count of rape in the first degree, three counts of criminal sex act in the first degree, aggravated sexual abuse in the third degree, criminal obstruction of breathing, and assault in the third degree.

Burtner could face 25 years for each sexual assault charge and up to 7 for each physical assault charge.
