Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director, has released data that supports the vaccine is having a positive impact with preventing the infection of Covid-19 among Oswego County residents.
Of the fully vaccinated individuals in Oswego County, 0.13% of fully vaccinated residents experienced breakthrough cases.
The first breakthrough case was recorded in March of this year, and the overall number up to July was 75.
For unvaccinated residents, 2.8% became infected.
Huang says that the data for Oswego County supports that an unvaccinated person is 22 times more likely to contract the virus than a fully vaccinated person.
He added that the Delta variant is likely the culprit for the number of breakthrough infections.
Before the Delta variant became dominant, Huang said that the vaccine drastically cut down on the number of daily new cases.
Between March and July there were 50 new cases of Covid-19 hospitalizations and only a small amount were breakthrough cases, all among people with underlying health conditions. Most vaccinated people who caught the virus had mild symptoms or were asymptomatic.
