Good Will offers tips for back-to-school shopping this fall

“Back to school” has a completely new meaning after a year and a half of at-home and hybrid learning, and as schools get ready for the in-person 2021-2022 school year, families everywhere will begin their back-to-school shopping very soon, if they haven’t already. That’s why Goodwill of the Finger Lakes is reminding local families that it’s an option for all back-to-school shopping needs, including clothing, shoes, backpacks, school supplies and more, all for a greater mission.

“We’re reading in the news that experts are forecasting school supply shortages and price increases in the weeks leading up to the first day of school for families,” Vice President of Community Engagement Jennifer Boutte said. “When you think back-to-school shopping, you might not think of Goodwill of the Finger Lakes, but we have clothing, lunchboxes, shoes, school supplies and backpacks across all of our stores — and for deals. I can’t promise we won’t sell out of backpacks and gadgets, but we have a lot of clothing to go around for children of all ages and sizes. (And for teachers!) All proceeds from shopping at Goodwill stores are reinvested back into our programming and mission, too.”

Goodwill leaders recommend shopping early. Start now! Make a budget and stick to it, and shop at Goodwill to make a larger impact on your greater community, as opposed to shopping at national and big-name retailers.

“We’ve all spent more time than we’d like to admit in pajamas in the past year,” said Sarah Pavia, marketing manager and in-house stylist at Goodwill of the Finger Lakes. “As we get up and out and ready for school, it’s a fun time to try a new style and wear what makes us feel the most comfortable and confident, and not just because it’s the ‘popular’ look of the season. You can find awesome stuff at Goodwill, and we hope this reminds families and shoppers to give us a chance with their back-to-school shopping.”

Shopping at Goodwill also supports sustainability and shoppers can know they are helping the planet by diverting items from landfills.

Local store hours are available at goodwillfingerlakes.org. Shoppers also can find back-to-school items on shopgoodwill.com, an online auction site operated by Goodwill, including popular items like calculators, musical instruments, sports equipment and many other things they’ll need for the upcoming school year.
