Counties confused over mixed messaging on COVID, delta variant

While some counties like Tompkins have issued new guidance aligning with CDC requests for masking indoors- others are confused about the vagueness.

The CDC released guidance this week saying people living in areas with high transmission rates should wear their masks indoors regardless of their vaccination status.

There are approximately a dozen counties- and counting- which that would apply.

Stephen Acquario with the New York State Association of Counties says the inconsistency is a challenge.

“It’s causing a bit of confusion at the local level over who is really in charge here with mask mandates or vaccine directives,” Acquario told Spectrum News. “Let’s be clear, the counties are going to follow the New York State Department of Health’s orders and the CDC’s recommendations.”

Governor Andrew Cuomo said starting Labor Day, all state public employees must either be vaccinated or take a weekly test.
