Hornell residents are expressing frustration over Norfolk Southern trains that now sit idle at the railroad crossing between East Avenue and Henry Street, obstructing traffic for a few hours at a time to an entire day.
Unsuspecting motorists find themselves trapped and locals end up directing traffic away from the trains.
People go as far as avoiding the area altogether due to being unable to even turn around and get out.
After enough complaints, Senator Chuck Schumer called on Norfolk Southern to change its change schedule going through Hornell and stop the prolonged stops that impede traffic.
Schumer said not only does it impede traffic, but blocks emergency services.
Mayor John Buckley shared at the last Common Council meeting that the city had attempted to reach out to Norfolk Southern and had been unsuccessful.
