Chuck Schumer has sent a letter to the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance informing them that if they do not distribute the $2.4 billion dollars the state has for rent relief, it will be lost.
Schumer said none of the money has been disbursed yet.
Governor Cuomo responded that the process is being streamlined and the money will be distributed soon.
He said the money would be going to the poorest tenants first then works it way up before running out by August 31st.
August 31st is the end of the moratorium on evictions for New York State that was implemented during the pandemic.
The NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance says that $700,000 in payments have been processed on top of the $117,000 that went out a week ago.
