The age of consent for marriage in New York is now 18.
This was built on legislation that Governor Cuomo signed in 2017 which worked to eliminate the ability for someone the age of 17 to get married with parental and judicial consent.
The move works to end child marriage.
Governor Cuomo said he’s proud to sign the legislation to help protect children from being exploited.
The legislation will go into effect 30 days after becoming law, applying to any marriage licenses filed after that date.
