Harmful algal blooms continue to be a problem on Cayuga Lake with 23 reported in 2021

The state’s latest Harmful Algal Blooms map shows reason for increased concern on Cayuga Lake as the summer continues.

Typically August and September are the worst months for outbreaks- and yet to date- Cayuga Lake has already seen 23 confirmed blooms of toxic algae.

Several swimming areas around Cayuga Lake have already been closed due to HAB reports.

Right now there have been 12 reported blooms in Cayuga County, six reported in Seneca County, and five in Tompkins County.
