While third baseman J.D. Davis slugged a pair of home runs in his return to the starting lineup, Mets closer Edwin Díaz was not able to preserve the lead in a ninth-inning save opportunity after the Pirates put together a five-run eighth inning.
Díaz gave up a walk-off grand slam to Jacob Stallings with two outs in the ninth, leading to a 9-7 defeat at PNC Park.
The pair of homers marked Davis’ first time going deep since April 25 after he was sidelined by a left hand strain that kept him out of action for more than two months.
