President Joe Biden stated that the For the People Act is a national imperative.
The act deals with voting accessibility, gerrymandering, campaign finance, election security, and ethics.
These issues are high on the Democratic Party’s priority list.
Republicans are against the measure, stating it’s partisan and an attempt to impose national voting standards on the states.
The bill was blocked in June by Senate Republicans.
While the bill was blocked, Democrats are persisting for a number of reasons.
One reason is the unsubstantiated allegations made by numerous Trump Republicans that the election was rigged that has added a sense of urgency to the bill.
In response to the accusation of the election being rigged, efforts are being made in 17 Republican states to pass laws that would curtail voter access.
One example is the state of Georgia, that has allowed the state elections board to appoint a single person to have control over vote counting and eligibility.
