New York State lawmakers in the Assembly and Senate are asking Governor Cuomo and the Department of Health to use Covid-19 relief funds to increase pay for home care workers.
Leaders asked the state to use the majority of the $1.6 billion set aside for home and community based services for the pay raise.
Lawmakers said that the pay for these workers does not respect the level of work they perform, and that it perpetuates their poverty.
Older New Yorkers are often turning to nursing homes because the workforce is short due to the low pay.
