The rate of car thefts has jumped 54% in one year

The state is seeing an increase in car thefts this year, according to the DMV.

In 2019 a little under 13,000 cars were reported stolen and in 2020 the number jumped to almost 20,000, an increase of 54%.

Thefts rates are the highest in the summer and the month of July is designated as National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month.

Though it might be obvious, the DMV says theft prevention is as simple as taking they keys out of a vehicle and locking it.
