UPDATE: Two people drown in Cayuga Inlet

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a drowning, which claimed the lives of two people in the town of Newfield.

According to deputies, they responded to an incident in the 100 block of Newfield Depot Road before 6:45 p.m.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office identifies the first victim as 27-year-old Carissa A. Stone of Newfield. The second victim is 29-year-old Michael R. Mayer of Van Etten.

The person who called 911 was flagged down by three children; the couple’s 5-year-old child and their 9-year-old niece and 9-year-old nephew. Though the children witnessed the incident they were physically uninjured.


The drowning had occurred at the West Branch Cayuga Inlet. The Sheriff’s office responded with Bangs Ambulance and the Newfield Fire Department.

The drownings have been ruled accidental.
