New York State Department of Health changes guidelines for fish women and children can eat from Lake Ontario

The New York State Department of Health released new recommendations for the consumption of fish out of Lake Ontario as well as other state waters for women and children.

Women under 50 and children under 15 can now consume up to four one-half pound meals per month of Rainbow Bullhead, Rainbow Smelt, Rock Bass, White Sucker and Yellow Perch.

They can also consume up to one half-pound meal per month of Salmon out of Lake Ontario. This also applies to the Niagara and Saint Lawrence rivers.

Before this announcement, women and children were recommended to avoid certain types of fish due to high mercury levels and pollutants.

Due the to the state’s decade long process of discontinuing use of industrial chemicals and cleaning up of contamination in state waters, the guidelines have changed.
