Cong. John Katko expressed his approval of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for their plans with the creation of a Lake Ontario Marine Sanctuary.
The sanctuary was proposed earlier to the city of Oswego and Oswego, Cayuga, Wayne, and Jefferson counties in 2017.
The draft environmental impact study that was released by NOAA includes 2 proposals that span over 1,700 miles of the southeastern Lake Ontario and Thousand Islands region.
The area holds 64 known shipwrecks and one aircraft from the last 200 years. Based on historical records, there could be an additional 20 shipwrecks and 3 aircrafts below the lake surface.
The NOAA is looking for local resident’s feedback during a public comment period that runs through September 10th.
