Auburn’s State Street Public Plaza is now being fully funded by outside grants.
Auburn City Council voted to accept a $178,114 grant from the Emerson Foundation, which will be added to the $1 million state grant as part of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative.
The project comes from the former location of Kalet’s Department Store, a property the city acquired in 1995 because of tax foreclosure. Failed attempts at redevelopment led the city to create an outdoor public park for the downtown area.
The project is moving along faster than expected, with an expected opening date before fall of 2021. The original date is for November of 2021.
