Gillibrand backs bill that would stop people proven guilty of hate crimes from owning firearms

A new bill, backed by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, would ban people guilty of hate crimes from being able to own guns.

Gillibrand referenced the uprising of suspected hate crimes in recent months, citing the eight victims from a shooting in March, six of which were women of Asian decent.

Gillibrand stated that the virus lockdowns amplified gun violence in New York State and gun violence has soared. She believes proven offenders must be prevented from owning firearms.

The bill would make it so anybody with a misdemeanor hate crimes conviction and higher would not be able to buy or own a gun.
