Every first Saturday of June is the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day, a nationally recognized trail awareness program.
This year, the Trail Works of Wayne County held the celebration at Huckleberry Swamp in North Rose.
The preserve is 79 acres and managed by the Olga Fleisher Ornithological Foundation. The preserve includes high quality wetlands, a boardwalk and wooded trails that give space for bird and wildlife habitat conservation.
As part of the celebration, aside from sharing the history of the swamp, event leaders also shared the seven principles of “Leave No Trace.” Attendees received a tag with the seven principles to use.
Elizabeth and Bill VanAcker, owners/managers of Huckleberry Swamp, worked together with Trail Works of Wayne County to help make the event possible.
