Nationwide police departments are dealing with police officer shortage, and Elmira is feeling it right now.
Interim Chief Anthony Alvernaz has stated that officers are retiring sooner than expected all over the country.
Alvernaz thinks that a lot of the early retiring is due to the anti-police rhetoric swarming social media over the last year.
The focus for Alvernaz is now recruiting, he has stated that officers who dedicated their lives to the career were heartbroken over the discourse occurring. This had a hand in early retirement.
Elmira Police Department has around 25 candidates on the list of candidates. Normally there are around 100 candidates, and part of the struggle is finding the good candidates among the list.
