A fight broke out among inmates at Elmira Correctional Facility on June 9 leaving multiple officers injured.
During breakfast an officer reportedly witnessed an inmate attack two other inmates at a table in the mess hall. The three inmates involved began fighting and three other inmates joined in.
Two officers gave orders to stop and after being ignored used two rounds of pepper spray and three inmates stopped. One inmate who continued to fight was put in a body hold on the ground.
Inmates were removed from the mess hall and when the inmate who began the fight was ordered to submit to a frisk, turned and spit blood in an officer’s face before being cuffed.
An inmate was injured with a make shift weapon and treated in the infirmary. All inmates are facing disciplinary charges.
When a search was conducted in the mess hall, officers found four weapons made of plexiglass with sharpened ends.
Three officers and one sergeant were injured in the ordeal. Two officers went to the Arnot Ogden Medical Center and were released later that day. The others were treated by facility medical staff.
This was the fourth incident to occur in a week at Elmira Correctional Facility.
