Ticks proving to be major summer problem as local population ‘explodes’

There’s been an explosion of tickets throughout the Finger Lakes and Upstate New York- and that has some healthcare providers concerned about the prevalence of Lyme disease.

“Ticks are exploding,” said Saravanan Thangamani, who spoke with Syracuse.com recently and runs Upstate Medical University’s testing lab.

In May, that lab in particular received more than three-times the number of ticks. They say there’s not only more ticks this year, but more of them are carrying microbes that make people sick.

In the first half of 2020 around 22% of ticks tested by the lab carried disease-causing bacteria. This year it’s trending toward 37%.

When it comes to prevention- awareness is the biggest tool. Experts say if you’re going to be outside- be prepared to check yourself for ticks when you return.

Call your doctor if you think you’ve been bitten by one or had a lengthy interaction with a tick.
