Community feedback not enough to stop closure of Auburn churches: Diocese committee reviewing plan

Earlier this spring it was reported that several churches in the Auburn area would be closed.

At this point, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester is reviewing plans to shut down some churches, while leaving others open.

Last year a committee was found to research the churches and recommend some for closure based on a variety of factors.

The plan, which includes shuttering several of those facilities, will be reviewed officially on June 23.

St. Alphonsus, St. Francis of Assisi and Holy Family churches in Auburn are up for closure, as well as St. Joseph Church in Weedsport.

While the Diocese received significant feedback from the community- it wasn’t enough to change their plans to shut down a number of churches.
