In an article published by Fast Company, Ithaca was stated as having the fifth highest vaccination rate in the country. The list was ranked by percentage of population that have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Leading the list was San Jose, The Villages Fla., San Francisco, and finally Napa, Calif.
Almost 2 out of every 3 Ithaca residents has received at least one dose of the vaccine and in the metro area 58.5% of residents have received both vaccines.
Frank Kruppa, the Tompkins County Public Health Director, says the success is due to several different factors.
“A big part of it is the collaboration we have had with Cayuga Health System in managing the vaccination center early on,” Kruppa said. “We had a head start and the momentum built from there.”
Kruppa also stated that the community put in a lot of effort, but still has work to do in order to reach the herd immunity level of 75%.
