What happens if a driver is on the street missing a license plate?
Most people have run into this before, and a recent investigation by News10NBC took a closer look. Motorists without front license plates, or with coverings on those plates so they’re difficult to read are as common as ever.
The state says that the DMV issues two plates and both must be used. There aren’t any exemptions, but there are apparently plenty of motorists not using one of the plates.
So, back to the core question: What happens? There’s a fine and surcharge, like any other ticket, but not a ton of them are being written.
In larger counties throughout the Finger Lakes, a few hundred tickets a year are written that fall into this category. The fine can be up to $200.
