Republicans in the House of Representatives elected Elise Stafanik to the third-ranking post after dropping Liz Cheney.
Stefanik was initially viewed as a moderate during the early part of her tenure, but that reputation turned more conservative as she threw growing support behind President Donald Trump during his time in office.
Stefanik defeated challenger Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, by 134-46 in a secret ballot vote.
Republicans are working to move away from the internal fighting over the future of the party- to a clearer party vision- one that hinges on many of the Trump-era policies.
