Official admits that Chinese vaccines not as effective, trials moving forward with mRNA versions

Top disease control officials in China are saying that their vaccines for COVID-19 do not have high-effecacy.

The AP reports that Chinese vaccines “don’t have very high protection rates,” said the director of the China Centers for Disease Control, Gao Fu.

The news comes after Beijing distributed hundreds of millions of doses abroad, and simultaneously promoted doubt about the effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

“It’s now under formal consideration whether we should use different vaccines from different technical lines for the immunization process,” Gao at a conference, which was reported by the AP.

mRNA vaccines have entered clinical trial stages in China. It’s unclear when they might be authorized for use.
