Finger Lakes Community College will host the creator of History Happy Hour for a look at the lives of fascinating women on Monday, March 29, at 7 p.m.
Maya Rook’s online talk to mark Women’s History Month will be accessible through a link at events.flcc.edu.
Rook, a historian and educator, records podcasts and gives live presentations designed to make history accessible, relevant and fun. She seeks to better understand the human mind and heart through the study of history and blends critical insight with humor and empathy in her investigations of the past.
At the FLCC event, she will consider how the stories of women have been included, and often excluded, from the historical record and share insights about a diverse range of significant individuals and communities. The audience is also invited to engage in a discussion on women in society today, shifting notions of gender, and how the history of women will be told in the future.
Rook holds a master’s degree in American cultural history from the University at Albany and a bachelor’s degree with double majors in history and black studies from SUNY New Paltz. Her recent podcast titles include “The Disneyfication of Pocahontas” and “Black Horror, Myth and History.”
