SECTIONAL TUESDAY: Top W-FL girls teams advance; Devon Martin’s 38 not enough as Geneva stunned late; Lyons-Whitman showdown

Monday night was a big night for Finger Lakes East boys teams. Tuesday night it was the Finger Lakes East girls teams showing out with Midlakes and Pal-Mac advancing in Class B1 while Waterloo and Penn Yan advanced in B2.

#2 Midlakes held off a stiff challenge from the #7 Wayne Eagles to win 65-40 in Clifton Springs. Grace Murphy paced the Screaming Eagles with 15 points while fellow sophomore Cate Peacock scored 12. Aly Johnson led Wayne with 12 points while Aaliyah Zenelovic pulled down 11 rebounds. Meanwhile in the same Class B1 bracket, top-seed Pal-Mac rolled past league-mate #8 Newark en route to a 56-24 win.

Undefeated at #1 seed in Class B2, the Waterloo girls varsity squad continues to obliterate opponents as they storm into the semifinals with an 86-22 win over Wayland-Cohocton. Macy Carr led the Indians with 21 points while Giavanna White-Principio scored 14. Waterloo will host Wellsville in the semifinals on Thursday night after the Tigers defeated North Rose-Wolcott by a 5 point margin.

Also in Class B1, Penn Yan advanced with a 54-42 win over Attica as Joddie Decker scored 22 points and Hayley Anderson added 13 to lead the Mustang charge. Penn Yan travels to face #2 Dansville on Thursday.

In the closest game of the night the Geneva Panthers lost a heartbreaker at Greece-Athena, 77-76. Panther senior Devon Martin hit an incredible three pointer to beat the shot clock and tie the game with 4 seconds remaining but Greece-Athena was fouled on the final shot attempt and sank the second of two free throw attempts to end Geneva’s season in Class A2. With the loss, Geneva became the first Finger Lakes East boys team to exit Sectionals.

In boys Class C1 action both #1 Lyons and #5 Marcus Whitman would advance and will meet on Thursday at the Atwood Gymnasium in the semifinals. The game will be streamed live on FL1 Radio beginning at 5:45 pm. Lyons had to fend off #8 East Rochester who was within 1 -possession midway through the 4th quarter before the Lyons eventually secured a 63-54 win. Marcus Whitman pulled away from host #4 Gananda in the second half for a 65-51 win. Lyons is attempting to win 4 straight sectional championships while Marcus Whitman is looking to defend last year’s sectional title which was the school’s first since 1976.

In Class C2, Finger Lakes West champs #2 Harley-Allendale-Columbia overcame a 14 point first quarter deficit to defeat #7 Clyde-Savannah, 57-53. Also in Class C2, Dundee would lose to #3 Oakfield-Alabama, 72-40.

In Class D1 girls play, the undefeated South Seneca Falcons defeated Jasper-Troupsburg in Ovid by a score of 58-21. Emma Fletcher led all scorers with 15 while Alissa Fletcher and Allison Kenyon scored 10 point each.

In boys Class AA play, the Victor Blue Devils advanced with a 9 point win over UPrep and in Class A1 Canandaigua fell to Leadership Academy.
