SECTIONAL MONDAY: Finger Lakes East boys sweep into semis; ER, Dundee girls advance

It was a banner night for the Finger Lakes East boys basketball league as Sectional play opened in Section V on Monday.

In Class B1, the undefeated #2 seed Wayne rolled past Dansville for a 32 point win and into the semifinals where they will host Livonia on Wednesday night. #4 Palmyra-Macedon will join Wayne in the B1 semifinal round as they held off a late surge from Hornell to hold on for a 53-44 win. Pal-Mac will travel to Batavia next to take on the #1 seeded Blue Devils.

To cap off an undefeated night for the Finger Lakes East, #6 seed Mynderse Academy followed a 2+ hour bus ride to Wellsville with a 67-41 rout of the home-standing #3 Tigers. The win propels Mynderse into Wednesday night’s semifinal where they will travel to face #2 C.G. Finney and superstar guard Markus Robinson who survived an upset bid from #7 Attica, 70-67. Wednesday night’s Mynderse-C.G. Finney semifinal game will be streamed live on FL1 Radio with pregame starting at 6:45 pm.

#8 Williamson was also in action in Class B2 seeing their season end at the hands of top-seed Northstar-Christian, 83-52.

The #3 Honeoye Bulldogs advanced to the Class D1 semifinals with a 47-34 win over Alfred Almond. Honeoye will face #2 Wheatland-Chili at 6 pm on Wednesday night for a berth into the D1 title game. On the opposite site of the D1 bracket, fellow Finger Lakes West league-mate South Seneca couldn’t stay with Eugenio Maria in a 85-58 loss.

It was a rough opening round for Wayne County girls teams with Lyons, Clyde-Savannah, Red Creek and Gananda all bowing out with losses. #1 seed East Rochester would advance, with a 84-44 win over Lyons. The Bombers will face #4 Alexander in the Class C1 semifinal on Wednesday night. Alexander held off a late comeback from Marcus Whitman to end the Wildcats season, 40-35.

Red Creek’s loss was the end of the road for Rams senior Isabella Wilbur who had played on varsity since the 7th grade. She ends her career as the Wayne County girls basketball all-time leading scorer.

In one of the closest games of the night the Dundee/Bradford girls held off #6 Geneseo for a 56-52 win. #3 Dundee will take on #7 York on Wednesday in the girls Class C2 semifinals. York upset #2 Oakfield-Alabama which means the semifinal game will be played in Dundee as the Lady Scots are the higher seed in the match-up.
