Ryan Archer leads Hobart to season-opening win over Mount St. Mary’s, 13-9

Senior attackman Ryan Archer scored a career-high four goals to lead Hobart College to a 13-9 Northeast Conference win over Mount St. Mary’s University to open the 2021 lacrosse season. The Syracuse native matched his career-high with seven points as the Statesmen rallied from a 7-5 halftime deficit on Stiles Field in the Poole Family Sports Dome.

Archer scored all four of his goals and recorded two of his three assists after halftime. Junior attackman Jason Knox added a hat trick. Sophomore faceoff specialist Adam Shea was 15-of-21 at the X with a game-high 11 ground balls. Sophomore goalie Kevin Holtby made 16 saves to earn the win in his first collegiate start.

Senior attackman Brendan Doyle led the Mountaineers (1-5, 0-1) with four points on a goal and three assists. Senior midfielder Luke Frankeny, senior attackman Brenden McCarthy and senior midfielder Sam Stephan each scored two goals. Stephen was 8-of-21 on faceoffs and picked up a team-high six ground balls. Senior goalie Dylan Furnback also recorded 16 saves.

With the game tied at 7 early in the third quarter, Archer scored all four of his goals in succession, giving Hobart an 11-9 lead with just over six minutes to go in the game. Archer briefly gave the Statesmen the lead with his first goal, but Frankeny answered to knot the game at 8. Archer finished a feed from sophomore attackman Troy Barthelme two minutes later, but again Frankeny countered with a man-up goal to tie the game for the fifth and final time.
