Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts says a corrections officer was arrested on a number of charges after smuggling drugs into the county jail.
Investigators say Corrections Officer Seth Welch, 26, of Newark was charged with promoting prison contraband, official misconduct, and criminal sale of marijuana.
The charges stem from an investigation at the Wayne County Jail, in which authorities say he supplied inmates with illicit drugs while on-duty.
Welch was arrested and arraigned. He’s scheduled to appear in Lyons Town Court at a later date.
The Sheriff’s Office reports that the investigation remains active and additional charges are pending.
Sheriff Virts says Welch was immediately suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. An internal investigation is also underway, he said.
