Sheriff Brian Schenck says his office is investigating a fatal crash that happened on Rt. 31 around 3:20 p.m. on Monday. It resulted in roadway being shut down for an extended period of time during the afternoon and evening hours as crews worked the scene.
A pickup truck operated by Tristan Hope, 24, of Auburn was traveling west on Rt. 31 when it crossed the center line striking an eastbound pickup truck operated by Michael Maltese, 52, of Weedsport.
Sheriff Schenck says Maltese was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, Hope was transported to Upstate Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation is on-going. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact Detective Josh Blanchard at 315-253-3902.
Assisting on scene was the New York State Police, Cayuga County 911 Center, Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office, Cayuga County Coroner’s Office, Port Byron Fire Department, Port Byron Ambulance, Weedsport Fire Department, Weedsport Ambulance, Jordan Ambulance and AMR Ambulance.
