An Ithaca police officer has been demoted and suspended following an investigation into comments he made about assaulting a rape suspect.
Sergeant Kevin Slattery self-reported comments he made on his body camera this past October, in which he describes beating Jovan Monk during a 2014 incident.
Mayor Svante Myrick says Slattery’s comments do not set a good example for the department and that discipline is warranted. He will be moved down from sergeant to officer, and will not be eligible for promotion until after two years.
His 30 day suspension will also be unpaid, the Mayor’s office said.
