High school athletes and coaches are excited about the opportunity to begin playing sports considered high-risk during the coronavirus pandemic.
Among those coming: Basketball and wrestling, which can start February 1, after an announcement by Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week.
“For our kids and our coaches, we wanted to give them the opportunity – but make sure that the people at the local level had the information to make the best decision,” Jon MacKerchar, director of athletics for the Penn Yan Central School District, told Finger Lakes News Radio. “Even this weekend it was working fast-and-furious to get things set.”
He says that students advocating for the restart of the winter sports season also contributed to the outcome that the state saw last week. Lawmakers from around Upstate New York were calling for winter sports to be resumed.
