The Finger Lakes led the way in a not-so-great category in 2020, according to data released by the state.
The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation said that Cayuga Lake had the most HAB notices in New York with 94. Meanwhile, Canandaigua and Owasco lakes finished in second- and third-place with 75 and 70 reports respectively.
Other lakes in the area – like Honeoye and Skaneateles also scored higher than most others.
HABs have been a year-over-year issue for the Finger Lakes region. The state has pushed for studying the problem, but those who watch lakes in the region say that there’s still a lot of unknown.
FingerLakes1.com is the region’s leading all-digital news publication. The company was founded in 1998 and has been keeping residents informed for more than two decades. Have a lead? Send it to [email protected].
