Did someone die of COVID-19 at the state prison in Auburn?
It was a question posed to Cayuga County officials, as well as the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision by The Citizen.
Apparently the answer is yes-and-no. A spokesperson for DOCCS reported that an inmate from Auburn Correctional Facility died at Auburn Community Hospital in late-December. The official cause of death was going to be clarified after an autopsy. While state reporting hasn’t changed – county officials tell The Citizen that there haven’t been any COVID deaths at the prison.
“There’s nobody that’s ever died as a result of COVID-19 at Auburn prison, either directly or indirectly,” Cayuga County Coroner Dr. Adam Duckett told them.
A spokesperson for DOCCS further clarified, noting that anyone who tests positive for COVID, then dies, is counted as a COVID-related death.
