OUR FINGER LAKES HISTORY: The “Spanish Flu” pandemic of 1918-19 in our region (replay)

Looking back, it was almost prophetic when Seneca County Historian Walter Gable chose the Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and 1919 as his subject for the September 27, 2019 episode of the Our Finger Lakes History podcast on FingerLakes1.com. The “Spanish Flu” pandemic killed millions of people worldwide and had a big impact on life in the Finger Lakes region.

Seneca County Historian Walter Gable describes the local impact through newspaper headlines and public records to demonstrate how day to day life for area residents came to a halt and shares some staggering numbers of lives lost in every local community. Compared to the events of 2020 and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this makes for an extremely interesting topic which is why we are re-publishing the episode below.
