U.S. officials on U.K. strain of COVID-19: Doesn’t appear to make more ill, or vaccine resistent

Health officials in the U.S. say they are taking a serious look at the variant seen in the U.K. The mutation of COVID-19 set off alarms in parts of Britain, but is no more likely to cause serious illness or be resistant to vaccines, experts say.

That said, Dr. Anthony Fauci says requiring a negative test before travelers enter the U.S. from the U.K. is a good idea.

“Does it make someone more ill? Is it more serious virus in the sense of virulence? And the answer is, it doesn’t appear to be that way,” Fauci said. “We’re going to be doing the studies ourselves.”

He echoed ongoing concerns that the worst could still be ahead for the U.S. if the virus is not taken seriously across the board.
