A Geneva man who was convicted of beating another person to death inside an apartment in September 2017 is getting a new trial.
Jeff Salone’s manslaughter conviction was unanimously reversed by the Fourth Judicial Department of state Supreme Court.
He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the death of Jawaun Brumfield.
The court ruled Ontario County Judge Brian Dennis should have never allowed certain testimony from Geneva Police Detective Steve Vine. Similarly the court ruled that Dennis should not have allowed Brumfield’s mother to testify about her son’s personal background.
Assistant District Attorney Jason MacBride says they plan to retry the case and are confident of conviction.
