There have been a lot of questions about the new cashless tolling system along the New York State Thruway, which went live this past weekend.
It was years in the making. But some motorists still have unanswered questions. One of the most-common that we received over the last week had to do with rental cars.
What happens if you’re driving a rental car?
It varies by rental car company, but the general policy is that the toll-by-mail bill will be sent to the rental company first. Then, if the rental company has a policy where bills are forwarded with a fee or surcharge – there’s a pretty good likelihood you’ll see it.
That said, most rental companies that operate in- and around- the Rochester International Airport have E-ZPass receivers in the car.
Read your agreement carefully, but there’s a good chance that when you take the rental car off the lot – tolls are already negotiated.
