The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports the investigation of a farm equipment fire last week on Swick Road.
It happened in the town of Romulus along Swick and Iron Bridge roads around 3 p.m. on November 10th.
Deputies say combine was actively burning when they arrived – and had spread to a field, which ignited approximately 300 feet of corn.
The driver, identified as Timothy Martin, 35, of Hector escaped without injury. The owner, identified as John Myer, 66, of Ovid was on scene while firefighters battled the flames.
Deputies say Ovid, Interlaken, Lodi, Romulus, Varick, and Fayette all responded to the scene. A nearby farmer, identified as Daryl Martin also assisted by bringing a tilling plow to the scene.
He plowed around the flames to stop the spread of the fire. It’s believed that the fire started in the tail of the tractor, catching rubber mats, engulfing the tractor, while the wind blew those flames across the field.
Damage is said to be around $100,000 in total. The property was insured.
