Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim sued by victim’s family over 2019 fatal crash

Syracuse University men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim is now facing a lawsuit over a 2019 crash that killed a city resident on Interstate 690.

The family of Jorge Jimenez is seeking an unspecified amount of money, claiming that Boeheim’s actions were “negligent, reckless and wanton.” As proof, the lawsuit notes that Boeheim was driving above the speed limit — 66 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to a police investigation — seconds before he collided with Jimenez on the highway.

“The collision involving decedent was caused by the negligence of defendant James Boeheim, who was travelling at a high rate of speed and/or was otherwise negligent in the operation of the vehicle,” Albany lawyer Terence O’Connor wrote.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in Onondaga County Supreme Court, also pulls SU into the fray, saying that the university owned the GMC Acadia SUV that Boeheim was driving that night.

The four-page lawsuit provides no further details about the crash, or Boeheim’s alleged negligence.Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick had concluded that Boeheim was speeding that night, but an investigation by Syracuse police concluded that Boeheim’s crash could still have been deadly even had he been following the speed limit.
