The Ithaca Police Department reports that on Thursday around 3:30 p.m. a suspect in multiple violent crimes was taken into custody.
It’s believed that Benjamin Thonney, of Ithaca, was experiencing psychosis and unusual behavior, which led to multiple agencies being involved in the arrest.
The Ithaca Police Department coordinated with Mid Lakes Assertive Community Treatment Team and the Tompkins County Mobile Crisis Team to assist in medical intervention once he was in custody.
IPD’s SWAT Team, patrol division, and investigations divisions all assisted and ensured that he could be transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Thonney faces multiple charges of second-degree assault and third-degree criminal mischief – from an incident on October 31st, as well as two more felony charges of menacing a police officer and robbery after incidents on November 3rd and 5th.
He will be arraigned in Ithaca City Court at a later date.
