Latest on stimulus checks: Don’t believe text message scams & some payments delayed into 2021

If you received a text message saying there’s federal stimulus money waiting for you on the other side of a clickable link – don’t act on it.

Local residents who haven’t received their stimulus checks yet, but are still unemployed, have reported receiving a text message which alleges that in order to receive payment – they must click on the link.

That isn’t the case at all, and no federal agency is running the stimulus program like this.

News10NBC reports that the FTC has received more than 5,000 complaints from people who got those text messages. To this point, the fraudsters have successfully cheated people out of more than $2 million.

Meanwhile, for those who have been waiting for their stimulus checks – it could be until 2021 before they are fully-resolved. Some people have been told that there will be a dedicated part of the income tax filing process that takes care of it for those who didn’t receive a check in 2020.
