Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick called for everyone to “lower the temperature” after Thursday afternoon’s arrest of a protest organizer outside Ithaca Police Department headquarters led to a loud protest at the scene on Thursday evening, and police deployed pepper spray towards protesters after declaring the gathering “an unlawful assembly.”
A statement from IPD Sr. Deputy Chief Vincent P. Monticello released Thursday night says the unrest began when a protester blocked an IPD Sergeant attempting to drive out of the police parking lot “with lights and sirens shortly after 5:00 PM to respond to a shots fired call.”
