New York has taken the dramatic action of blocking STAR rebate checks to those who have unpaid tax bills, according to state records.
Homeowners who didn’t pay their property taxes were subjected to a relatively new law passed by the legislature, which prevents rebate checks from going out to those who do not pay their taxes.
Syracuse.com reports that the state has blocked over $5 million, and that it accounts for 10,000 checks in all.
Prior to the law being passed there was no mechanism to check whether individual property taxpayers had stayed current on taxes.
Those who have stayed current on their tax bills in past years will continue to receive their STAR benefit.
