Two children were killed in a 4-vehicle crash that started when a pickup truck crashed into a minivan on Thursday morning on the New York State Thruway in northern Seneca County.
NYS State Police report that on Thursday, at approximately 10:29 am, New York State Troopers responded to a 4-vehicle crash on the New York State Thruway in the westbound lanes near Junius Ponds Rest Area in northern Seneca County in which 2 children were killed. Investigators believe that traffic was slowing for a lane closure when a pickup truck failed to slow down and struck a minivan from behind, which struck a small passenger vehicle, which struck a tractor-trailer.
The 2 rear seat belted passengers in the minivan, ages 9 and 11, were killed.
The driver and front seat passenger of that minivan were airlifted to Strong Hospital with serious injuries.
The operator of the truck was treated at the scene. The operator of the other passenger vehicle was transported to Geneva General Hospital for non-life -threatening injuries.
The NYS Thruway re-opened the westbound lanes shortly after 2:00 pm.
The names of all parties will be released after notifications are made. The investigation is continuing and charges into this matter are pending.

All lanes were blocked and traffic was slowed between exits 41 and 42 along the New York State Thruway.
Both Mercy Flight and Lifenet were requested to the scene.
Transportation officials indicated that the crash was in the westbound lanes. It’s unclear at this time how many vehicles were involved.
Stop-and-go traffic was being reported.
