School advocates in New York are pushing to ban suspensions in grade school.
The “Solutions not Suspensions” coalition sent a letter to both the governor and the NYS Board of Regents.
They say stopping suspensions among the youngest students will help minimize the long-term traumatic impact of the pandemic.
They also argue that suspensions are not an effective way to deal with students that have behavioral problems.
Some districts across the state are already considering a ban on them this year.
The state hasn’t responded or made a decision on the issue.
