The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has suspended contraband drug testing in facilities across the state.
That’s a decision that NYSCOPBA says will result in more violence inside prisons. DOCCS says that false-positives in contraband testing was the reason for the suspension.
NYSCOPBA says that testing is necessary to protect correctional facilities. They further note that inmates won’t be held accountable for introducing illegal drugs into prisons.
“Steps need to be taken immediately to ensure that the hard-working men and women of NYSCOPBA can properly administer these tests,” NYSCOPBA President Michael Powers said in a press release. “We need to ensure that prison rules are being followed and we won’t stand for carelessness that puts our members’ safety in jeopardy.”
